Variant Spelling; Gilsenan, Gilshenan, Gilsenon, Gilshinan, Gilshenon, Gunshinan, McGillshenan

When they came to Ireland with the Norman invasion the family was known as de Nogent after the town Nogent in France. They received large grants of land in Meath and Westmeath where the head of the family became Earl of Weatmeath in 1621.

A branch of the family settled in Co. Cork near Carrigaline where descendents of the Nugents are common to this day,

In the history of the country the family has supported both the English and Irish causes. Sir Richard Nugent (d. 1460), was Lord Deputy of Ireland, while Thomas Nugent (d. 1615), was Chief Justice of Ireland.

After the Seige of Limerick Christopher Nugent (d. 1731) took service with France where he commanded Nugent's regiment. Sir John Nugent was made a Knight of St. Louis after his bravery at the battle of Fontenoy.

The last Catholic Earl of Westmeath was John Nugent (1672-1754).
